Our financial strength and professional reputation encourage companies’ management to consider our views, and take them into account where possible.
Our sustainable and responsible investment team works closely with all the companies we invest in, promoting best practice standards. Companies are required to demonstrate that they manage their social and environmental impacts effectively. By holding frequent one-to-one meetings with company management we’re able to raise any concerns with them directly. We also publicise our concerns where appropriate – you’ll find examples of this in the documents section.

Julie McDowell
Head of Sustainable and Responsible Investment
A US lawyer, Julie's a member of the bar of the District of Columbia, New York and Florida, and is admitted to practise in several US federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States. She has enjoyed a distinguished career in the US working for leading Wall Street firms and the US State Department in Washington. She's been active in the field of sustainable and responsible investment since 2000. Julie is currently a board member of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and the Global Reporting Initiative Working Group on Mining Sector Supplement.
David Scott
SRI Researcher
David has an honours degree in Economics and Geography from the University of St Andrews and an MSc in Ecological Economics from Edinburgh University. Before joining the SRI team at Standard Life Investments, he gained experience in corporate actions and stock lending at Ignis Asset Management.
